Our Story

Fortune DT Sacco Society Ltd traces its origins to the mid-20th century (1972) in Kenya's agricultural heartland, Kirinyaga County, where it was established as the Union Banking Section (UBS) of the Kirinyaga District Co-operative Union (KDCU). The institution primarily served coffee and tea farmers in Kirinyaga District, who faced limited access to financial services amid economic and climatic challenges. By pooling resources through collective savings and credit, the UBS addressed acute needs, breaking cycles of poverty and promoting self-reliance among rural families and communities. From these humble beginnings, our purpose has remained steadfast: to transform vulnerability into sustainable viability, empowering individuals to convert their hard-earned agricultural yields into lasting wealth.
Rebranding:As Kenya's cooperative sector evolved through regulatory reforms, so did we, by transitioning from the UBS to the autonomous Kirinyaga District Farmers Sacco Society in 1998 under the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA). This step formalized our structure while honoring our farming roots. The defining rebrand to Fortune Sacco Society Ltd followed in 2008, strategically broadening our appeal beyond regional boundaries to a national audience of diverse savers and borrowers. This evolution was more than a name change; it embodied our democratization of wealth creation across Kenya, ensuring equitable access to financial tools for every citizen, irrespective of their socioeconomic or geographic background, and fostering a co-operative model that uplifts the nation as a whole.
Remarkable Growth:Decades of member-focused service have propelled this Sacco to remarkable heights, growing from a modest group of local farmers to over 140,000 dedicated members today; a clear indicator of the trust built through competitive dividends, flexible lending options, and inclusive outreach programs. This expansion has drawn in entrepreneurs, salaried professionals, and underserved households, aligning with our ethos of turning savers into empowered stakeholders. Complementing this is our robust branch network of 18 locations nationwide, including the recent openings in Ongata Rongai and Ruai to serve burgeoning urban and peri-urban populations. These additions bridge urban-rural gaps, making services more accessible and reducing participation barriers. With assets surpassing KSh 10 billion and a loan portfolio exceeding KSh 8 billion, our growth narrative underscores resilience, adaptability to economic trends, and a commitment to shared prosperity for all.
